Graham Coxon opens up about Blur's future plans

Blur's Graham Coxon has admitted that there is a "pressure" for the band to work together again in the future.

Speaking to Music News, the guitarist said he and his bandmates were aware that their fans were eager to see the Britpop legends record new material, but insisted that they had no made concrete future plans.

"We're all in a good place, we're all getting on really well," he said. "And that's just great for now. It's something that we have to seriously consider and bear in mind our legacy."

He added:

There is a pressure for us to do more, but we can't do it just because people want us to. We have to do it because it's right.

Last month, Coxon's bandmate Alex James insisted he "loves" being in the studio with Blur. His comments came shortly after producer William Orbit told NME that he had been working with the band on new material, but that progress was stalled when frontman Damon Albarn brought the sessions to an abrupt halt.

In April, Albarn denied he was finished with Blur after earlier suggesting that their huge Hyde Park reunion gig to coincide with the close of this summer's Olympics in August would be their final show. The band are due to warm up for the show with a short tour taking in dates in Margate, Wolverhampton and Plymouth, along with headlining Sweden's Way Out West in the same month.

My brain hurts from all of this. I can understand Graham saying that there's pressure, though, of course there is.

So basically, NME are reporting as news that Graham's said in an interview that fans want Blur to make a new album, and they may or may not...

Pulitzer prize worthy journalism.

Sounds about right. They actually care about the quality of music they make, which is almost eccentric in today's music market. They're probably their own best critics, too and are hard enough on themselves to really edit things down to only what they think is special enough to put on a new album. And it must be daunting because the bar is set so high.

It is kind of funny, though, that after all they've accomplished -- together and separately -- they're still as nervous about whether what they produce will be good enough. That's probably why it always is. It was usually the experienced sailors who fell from aloft while unfurling sails, not the green ones because the experienced ones would get lax, lazy and too over-confident in what they'd done over and over again, so many times before.

If and when it happens, it happens.

I would rather they did it because wanted to. than doing a half assed album because people wanted them to.

I think they're probably secretly in competition with Suede to see who can dick around the studio the longest without making any sort of commitment, frustrating rabid fans (woof!) in the process.

My money's on Blur.

Kraftwerk have come out with one album of new material since 1986.
And as far as anyone knows, when they're not touring they're at Kling Klang making music. :P

funny thing is the link to the full interview has been posted in this forum here before, some (including me) have watched it, but apparently what Graham said on the band appeared to be no exciting news... except to NME.
everything is constantly evolving...
