Artists you can't get into...

Postby Rubi » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:29 pm

Or rather, artists that are considered famous/influential, but you don't seem to comprehend where all the hype comes from.

Personally, I can't understand what many people find so interesting about Beck. I find his music dreary and plain boring. I've downloaded four albums (Guero, Midnite Vultures, Odelay, The Information), but none of them attracts me. A few good songs here and there, but nothing special. The Information is the only one I can somewhat cope with, although it has many dull moments.

Other mentions would be Beastie Boys, Joy Division and Sonic Youth.

Björk. Only because I can't stand her voice.

Or Guns and Roses. First, because I'm not particularly a hard rock fan. And second, I fucking disdain Axl Rose.

I should probably like Wire. But I just can't get into them.

And Kenickie, though that's mostly because I cannot stand whatshername's voice.

The Smiths

To me they are the most over-rated band ever. I know that they have influenced many and so many people love them, but, I've never understood why.

Oh, there are lots of bands that fit this description for me - although I'm happy to stick my neck out and defend The Smiths, Wire and Bjork.

For me the main offenders are Radiohead. I know that they're brilliant, but do I like them? No. Other bands whose quality I wouldn't argue with but whom I somehow don't much like include Pulp, (late) REM, Prince, Arcade Fire and a bunch of 60s acts that don't interest me (Love, The Beatles, the Beach Boys).

Then there are a load of bands that other people rate and are sometimes surprised I don't - but whom I think are a load of shit. So that list consists of the Strokes, The Verve, Smashing Pumpkins, Belle & Sebastien, U2, The Libertines etc. All awful (apart from '1979' by The Smashing Pumpkins, which is surprisingly wonderful).

I'd like to add Super Furry Animals to my list. I should like them, but I don't.

Agree with Elvis and U2. Also Coldplay (I doubt I'm alone there!), Morrissey (the Smiths I can just about tolerate), Oasis, Stone Roses, Metallica, Faith No More...

oh this could go on forever

I dunno if that counts... well, there are also several bands I "should" check (according to Last.fm and other people), but I'm just too lazy to do that. Therefore I can't get into those bands, obviously.

Beastie Boys

Oh noes! Love Beck. Love him. And my 2 favourite bands are Blur and the Beastie Boys.

But nothing is for everybody, so fair enough. I'm not gonna tell you why you should like them or whatever, cos I'm not a dick.

That's because their later stuff is rubbish. Love Locust Abortion Technician though.

That didn't even do anything for me either. Mind you I love Rage Against the Machine. And I'm listening to Super Furry Animals as we speak.
