'Britpop' July

Postby ThereMustBeMoreToLife » Sun Dec 14, 2008 7:41 pm

I'm seeing Blur at Hyde Park on the 2nd and Oasis at Wembley a week later on the 9th.

Looking forward to seeing Blur more I have to say because I saw Oasis on their current album tour and they weren't 100%. Blur on the other hand - hopefully they will be fresh with well-rehearsed old tunes and, is it too much to ask for a couple of new ones?

When The Verve came back at Glasto last year they debuted Love Is Noise - will Blur kick off my Britpop July with some new material?

I think they'll play 2 or 3 new songs. As when they played country house and stereotypes in britpop era.

Why wouldn't they play Country House? I'm throwing my hat into the ring and betting they will - lots of things they've said indicates they're being quite reflective about this thing - they can look back and view some of their britpop songs in a new light - as songs in their own right. OK, so CH is not their best song, but it is a good song - and a major piece of their history. Thousands of poeple will be a t the gig, and for thousands of them, Country House will be one of the only songs they know most fo the words to, or will at least be able to sing along too on the chorus. Perhaps they could even update some of those songs, give them a punk edge or something.

Didn't Damon say he was embrassed and ashamed to sing Country House on the Singles tour? I wouldn't want them to play songs they weren't happy with, they've got so much better material than Country House anyway.

Yeah, and I thought Graham didn't like Country House much either. Didn't like the whole 'oompah-oompah' side of it. I can't think of the right word. You know what I mean.

Yes but sometimes, don't you think bands should pay songs they don't like, but that a LOT of other people like? I mean, CH is one of the defining Blur moments - and has a lot to do with their continued success. I find it a bit rich when bands poo poo songs that they did actually write, perform, lark about in the video of, and get well paid for. To then turn aroudn and say 'this song is stupid and we hate it and won't play it again' is really like saying to all those peope who bought it 'you stupid suckers, ha ha ha, thanks for your cash now piss off.' I KNOW that's not the attitude of any of Blur, but to some that's how it can seem. You have to be able to laugh at yourself...

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from, Jeff. Country House was one of the defining moments in Britpop. Height of the Blur v. Oasis fight, and generally quite a good song. But it's aged. The moment you listen to it, you can tell it's aged. And sometimes that isn't a bad thing in a song, but frankly I'd rather hear them play something like Trimm Trabb or Death Of A Party. Something totally timeless that might win them some new fans as well, as opposed to the people who remember Country House as 'that song that was released during that fight with Oasis'. All depends on the rest of the set list, I suppose.
(And sorry if none of that made any sense. I should stop posting when I'm really tired. XD)

Either way, they probably will play it. Almost everything off the Best Of will get played, I reckon.

A LOT of fans don't like it either, it was good for the era and time but blur have matured & moved on musically. I don't want everyone to remember blur for Country House and their battle with Oasis but if they keep bringing the song back @ gigs then everyone will. I would rather they play some new material/new single than to hear Country House.

This is exactly what I wanted to say, only more coherent and better written. Brilliant! :D

Agreed, I would personally rather hear other songs, and especially new ones - I wouldn't be upset at all in Country House didn't get played. But I stillt hink there will be a few thousand people who want to hear it... having said that, I also take the point that those people can be won over by hearing mroe quality material, and new songs that can replace the more purile hits in their minds. Time will tell - exciting times.
